7 questions to ask yourself before adopting a pet

Adoption is a long-term commitment. These seven questions will help you and your future friend make the right decision.

7 questions to ask yourself before adopting a pet

Adopting from a shelter means both saving a life and finding a loyal friend. But it is a commitment that can last 10–15 years. Answer these questions honestly before you apply.

1. How much time do I have?

Dogs need at least two walks a day, play and attention. Cats may seem more independent, but they also need company and play. Think about your work schedule and plan services like daycare if needed.

2. Is my home suitable?

The size of your flat, whether you have a yard and your landlord's permission all matter. Large, energetic dogs want space and an active life; a calm cat or a small dog may suit a small flat better.

3. Does everyone in the family agree?

The pet will be part of the whole family. Everyone should agree, and who is responsible for what should be decided in advance. Check for allergies in the family too.

4. Can I cover the costs?

Food, vaccinations, parasite treatment, grooming, accessories and unexpected vet bills belong in your monthly budget. A small "pet emergency fund" is a good idea.

5. Which personality suits me?

Look at character more than looks. An older, calm animal may suit a quiet lifestyle, while an energetic young dog suits an active one. Shelter staff know the animals well — ask for their advice.

6. What happens when I travel?

Who will look after your pet during holidays and business trips? A trusted friend, a pet hotel or a home-care service should be planned in advance.

7. Am I ready for the settling-in period?

A shelter animal can take several weeks, sometimes months, to settle into a new home. Shyness, low appetite or toilet accidents in the first days are normal. Patience, a calm environment and a consistent routine help most.

If you can say "yes" to every question — congratulations, you are ready for a new friend!
